Training for detection of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at airport checkpoints requires continued development as training technology must keep up with threat technology. In this paper, we describe the state of research on training interventions for X-ray baggage screeners. We propose that the addition of individually adaptive training elements to exposure and discrimination training paradigms will lead to higher detection accuracy and speed as well as maximize efficiency for training. Implications for researchers and training professionals are discussed. Copyright 2010 by Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, Inc. All rights reserved
