Controlled chemical functionalization of gold nanoparticles through solid-phase place exchange reactions was demonstrated as an efficient approach toward particles with a single chemical group attached on the nanoparticle surface. The assynthesized monofunctional gold nanoparticles were used as a versatile building blocks in bottom-up approach to prepare various particle assemblies through coupling reaction with other chemicals, molecules, and nanoparticles. Unique optical properties such as enhanced nonlinear optical property and electromagnetic coupling interactions between nanoparticles were observed from a nanoparticle necklace structure prepared by this approach. © 2008 American Chemical Society
