Polarization diversity transmitter is proposed to realize polarization-insensitive coherent detection using polarization-time coding. It can significantly reduce cross-phase-modulationinduced polarization scattering in wavelength-division multiplexing systems. Polarization-time coding is analogous to space-time coding in wireless communications. © 2006 Optical Society of America
