The study of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) has been an active research topic in recent years due to the rapid growth of UAS real-world applications driven by the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). UAS are defined as a complete unmanned system including control station, data links, and vehicle. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) refers to the vehicle element of the UAS. Currently UAS operate standalone, independent of neighboring UAS and used primarily for reconnaissance. However UAS roles are expanding to the point where UAV swarms will operate as cooperative autonomous units.
