Thermolysis has been employed by many to generate hydrogen from ammonia borane (AB) complex. Even though, AB pyrolysis begins at temperatures below 140° C, to release all of the hydrogen contained in ammonia borane, temperatures in excess of 500° C are required. The overall process is exothermic, but requires heat to be added to activate the AB complex. One of the main drawbacks of AB thermolytic process is the involvement of competing reactions leading to the formation of certain undesirable by-products such as borazine and polymeric aminoboranes.
