The objective of this work is to improve the surface properties and adhesion of coatings on polyimide substrates by laser surface treatment. The coating can be deposited by different techniques such as physical vapour deposition, conventional chemical vapour deposition, laser chemical vapor deposition and low temperature thermal spray. The polyimide substrates can be laser-treated first to create a regular, roll-like texture and carbon-rich laser-modified surface to improve the subsequent deposition of coatings on the substrate.
