Communication des éléphants de forêts pendant leur nutrition dans le Parc national d’Ogooué Leketi au Congo Brazzaville

Knowledge about the communication of forest elephants in the Ogooué Leketi during foraging is important for effective conservation and monitoring strategies of the animals. The eco-ethology of forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) is less studied than that of savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana). Elephant communication was examined in the two clearings Madjouama and Bissoloko and elephant nutrition in the surrounding forests in the Ogooué Leketi National Park in the Republic of Congo during 24 months from January 2013 to December 2014. Elephant sounds were recorded from the SM2 Autonomous Recording Unit (ARU) to collect data over a 2 km2 area for 3 months without interruption. The data were then downloaded into the SDs for analysis. The spectrogram with the frequency spectra of the elephant sounds was read out in the Raven software. The fresh tracks of the elephants were followed for about a kilometer to count the remains of the food. Plant species consumed by the elephants were collected for determination by specialists in the herbarium. Fresh dung was also analyzed for content. Results showed that forest elephants use the Bissoloko clearing more than the Madjouama clearing. They used the clearings more at night than during daylight hours in both clearings. Factors that affect elephant visitation are seasonality and year-to-year fluctuations. The structure and size of the clearings becomes a dependent variable when all three variables are combined. Elephants intentionally fed on two plant species, Grossera macrantha 29 (3.6%) and Strombosiopsis tetandra 21 (2.6%) of the 249 plant species and 3 animal species recorded in the 26 feeding tracks. Elephants also occasionally fed on some species of Chrysophyllum africanum and Omphalocarpum procerum fruits, which they found in abundance on the ground during their movements. All three invertebrates were consumed by elephants accidentally while feeding on honey, termite mound soil and ant nests. Future conservation is essential for this trans-boundary elephant population of Congo-Gabon. L’écoéthologie des éléphants de forêt (Loxodonta cyclotis) est moins étudiée que ceux de l’éléphants de savane (Loxodonta africana). La communication des éléphants était examinée dans les deux clairières Madjouama et Bissoloko et la nutrition des éléphants dans les forêts environnantes dans le Parc National Ogooué Leketi en république du Congo pendant 24 mois de janvier 2013 à Décembre 2014. Les sons des éléphants étaient enregistrés à partir des appareils «Autonomous Recording Unit (ARU)» de marque SM2, afin de collecter les données a une superficie de 2 km2 pendant 3 mois sans interruptions. Les données étaient ensuite téléchargées dans les SD pour passer aux différentes analyses. C’est au niveau du logiciel Raven que nous avons lu le spectrogramme avec les spectres des fréquences des sons des éléphants. Les pistes fraiches des éléphants ont été suivis à près d’un kilomètre pour recenser les restes des nourritures. Les espèces végétales consommées par les éléphants étaient récoltées pour être déterminées par les spécialistes dans les herbarium. Les crottes fraiches étaient aussi analysées pour en déceler le contenu. Comme résultats, les éléphants de forêts utilisent plus la clairière de Bissoloko que la clairière de Madjouama. Ils utilisent les clairières plus pendant la nuit que pendant les heures de lumières dans les deux clairières. Les facteurs qui interviennent dans la visitation des éléphants sont les saisons et les fluctuations des années. La structure et la taille des clairières devient une variable dépendante c’est lorsque toutes les trois variables sont combinées. Les éléphants se sont nous intentionnellement des deux espèces des plantes, Grossera macrantha 29 (3.6%) et Strombosiopsis tetandra 21 (2.6%) sur les 249 espèces végétales et 3 espèces animales recensées dans les 26 pistes de repas. Les éléphants se nourrissent aussi occasionnellement des certaines espèces des fruits Chrysophyllum africanum et Omphalocarpum procerum qu’ils trouvent en abondances sur le sol durant leurs déplacements. Les trois invertébrés ont été consommés par les éléphants de manière accidentelle en voulant se nourrir la fois du miel, le sol de la termitière et les nids des fourmis. La conservation future est essentielle pour cette population d’éléphants transfrontalière Congo Gabon.
