Wageningen University & Research has tested a number of extracts from ornamental plants to control thrips. Extract B011 emerged as the most interesting candidate for the development of a marketable plant protection product. In the Extract B011, the molecules Fl-A and Fl-L seem to be partly responsible for thrips control; however, the entire extract was most effective. The effect was improved by the combination with rapeseed oil. Cost calculation showed that the extraction method used, leads to a too high price compared with commercially available products. The business model can be improved by breeding and/or selecting varieties with a more effective pest control. This might also be possible by applying certain light spectra during cultivation, but this could not be proved in an exploratory test within this project
