Stories of Migration: Exploring the Links Between Emotions and Technologies in the Narratives of Venezuelan Refugees in Brazil

There is a growing body of literature that recognizes the role of digital media in the emotional aspect of refugees’ life trajectories. New communication technologies have been increasingly important not only for mediating emotional experiences but also for creating new spaces of emotions within the hybrid and transnational spheres of refugees’ home-exile relationships. Drawing upon a co-constitutive understanding of the relations between emotions and technologies, this chapter presents a study that explores, for the first time, the different temporalities and spatialities characterizing the migration experiences of Venezuelan refugees coming to/in Brazil. Understanding the link(s) between emotions and digital media through a co-constitutive lens helps elucidate how social, cultural, political and economic factors interact with refugees’ specific experiences of mediated affect at different stages and across a range of contexts in under-explored contexts of forced displacement in the Global South
