Tall Buildings: View From Six Regions

This article has the aim to identify different terms and concepts regarding tall buildings, as well as to evaluate the presence and hierarchy that these buildings have on a global level. The methodology used considered the global database of tall buildings published by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Six important regions of the world were analysed and classified as clusters. Forty-eight buildings in several cities studied were quantitatively described. As result, the global diversity of the spatial configurations in terms of heights and year of construction of the buildings were defined, as well as the population trends in the cities that make up each cluster. This research confirms a big diversity of criteria for naming buildings in height, finding thirteen terms and eighteen different concepts. Tall buildings occupied by offices predominate in the clusters evaluated.
