Academic Data Models: Freshmen Registration Data Analysis

At Rollins, rather than have students register for classes during orientation, faculty members are responsible for registering students for classes in their first semester. Students then have the opportunity to change the schedule created by the faculty members during the orientation process. This paper focuses on finding differences between the schedule created by the faculty members which is called the faculty generated class schedule and the students final schedule which is called the students modified schedule. These differences are then presented in the form of statistics and charts. Some of the statistics examined in this thesis include how many students removed a class from their faculty generated class schedule, what percentage of classes chosen by faculty members were kept by the student, what percentage of classes on the modified schedule were chosen by faculty members, what percentage of faculty chosen classes the student has dropped from their modified schedule, what class subjects students have removed from the faculty generated class schedule and added to their modified schedule, and finally what competency classes students have removed from their faculty generated class schedule and added to their modified schedule. These findings will allow us to draw some high level conclusions about how students are changing the schedules created by faculty members. Using these conclusions, faculty members will be able to create more effective schedules for freshmen students in the future
