Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical Studies, Anti Hyperglycemic Activity and In Vitro Anti Oxidant Studies of Wrightia Tinctoria (Roxb) R.Br. Leaves

The present investigations draws the following conclusions. Pharmacognostical parameters for the leaves of Wrightia tinctoria(Roxb.) are established. The diagnostic features of Wrightia tinctoria R.Br. The derived parameters would help to fix or draw the monographical standards and found to the characteristic variations on the review articles. Quantitative estimation helps to identify the tannic acid, gallic acid and flavonoids equivalents present in the hydro-alcoholic extract of Wrightia tinctoria(Roxb.). TLC studies recorded the presence of phenolic compounds and Flavonoids. The phytochemical screening of the hydro-alcoholic extract (70%) Wrightia tinctoria(Roxb.). (Leaf) powder revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, cardiac glycosides, coumarine glycosides, sterols, tannins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, proteins, amino acids, terpenoids, gum and mucilage. Pharmacological screening potentiates the biological Invivo antihyperglycemic activity studies in Alloxan induced diabetic rats, invitro alpha amylase inhibitory effect and Invitro antioxidant effects which differs from other literary source. In our study, HAEWT showed significant increase in the plasma insulin level when alloxan induced diabetic rats were treated with Hydroalcoholic Extract of Wrightia tinctoria at a dose of 200 and 400mg/kg this could be due to potentiation of the insulin effect of plasma by increasing the pancreatic secretion of insulin from existing β- cells of islets of Langerhans or its release from bound insulin. The level of glycemic control is the major determinant of total and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglyceride, concentrations. Treatment of normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats treated HAEWT at a dose of 200 and 400mg/kg for 28 days resulted in marked decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides, Low density lipoprotein(LDL) and phospholipids levels and increase in HDL-C levels as compared to alloxan induced diabetic rats. Further investigation may be carried out for the bio-active fraction for its potential pharmacological effects. Future research may be extended to isolate other phyto constituents present in this plant
