Evaluating the Regenerative Efficiency of Amniotic Membrane as Guided Tissue Regeneration with Platelet Rich Fibrin as a Bone Fill in Chronic Periodontitis Patients with Vertical Bone Defect: A Split Mouth Clinical study

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the regenerative potential of Amniotic Membrane as guided tissue regeneration in chronic periodontitis patients with vertical bone defect. METHODS: A randomised split mouth clinical study for evaluating the regenerative efficiency of Amniotic Membrane as guided tissue regeneration with platelet rich fibrin as a bone fill in chronic periodontitis patients with vertical bone defect. A total of 15 patients were enlisted, Two quadrants with vertical defect was selected, flap surgery with PRF as a bone fill in one quadrant and flap surgery with PRF+ Amniotic membrane as GTR in another quadrant was done. Effect of PRF and PRF+Amniotic membrane was analysed by comparing the clinical parameters at baseline and 6 months after surgery. Patient was recalled after 1,3, 8 week and 3,6 months after surgery for review. OPG and IOPA was taken before surgery and 6 months after surgery to compare the bone regeneration. RESULTS: Mean PD reduction and CAL gain was greater in PRF+Amnion (4.90±1.19 mm, 4.87 ± 1.29 mm) site than control site PRF alone (2.90 ± 0.93 mm, 2.83 ± 0.91 mm). Furthermore, significantly greater percentage of Vertical defect depth reduction was found in the PRF+Amnion (53.01 ±0.52 %) compared to control PRF alone (39.09 ± 0.52 %). CONCLUSION: Amnion as a guided tissue regenerative membrane showed a potential role in periodontal regeneration in the treatment of vertical bone defects in chronic periodontitis patients. As Amniotic Membrane had pleuripotent potency it enhanced the regeneration of bone when used along with Platelet rich fibrin. In future, Amniotic Membrane would be a promising alternative to commercially available membranes for periodontal regeneration
