This Christmas, families across Canada exchanged gifts. Everything from sweaters to cameras, fishing lures to skis, shoes to basketballs, sunglasses to cell phones. All these gifts have one thing in common: they are made with petroleum products. They are transported to market with gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. The only part of their journey not fueled by hydrocarbons is on the back of Santa’s sleigh and I’ve heard some theories about Rudolph's nose. Nineteen Newfoundlanders go to the cinema. The ticket lady asks "Why so many of you?" Buddy replies, "The film said 18 or over." My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday. So I went to our local pet shop and they were s70.00! Forget it, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. I was at an A.T.M, yesterday. A little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over. My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30 am. Can you believe that! 2:30 am? Luckily for him I was still up playing my bag­pipes. The wife was counting all the nickels and dimes out on the kitchen table when she suddenly got very angry and started shouting and crying for no reason. "Of course," I thought to myself, "she's go­ing through the change." The miracle of hydrocarbons has made the wishes of countless Canadian children come true. It has also kept them warm at night while they wait for the magic of Christmas morning. Oil. gas. and fossil fuels make Christmas happen. You might say that the luckiest child of all is the one who receives a lump of coal in his stocking. RevereiA^ Crflpwh The church is dying. We have heard this quite a lot in recent years - probably since the sixties when there were reports that God was dead. Fake news! I think that there are a lot of churches that have closed, but I am not sure that it was for a lack of faith, more likely an economic or societal shift. Small towns struggle, and if they fail so does the local church. We can see this first hand in the small communities that once dotted the prairies. The elevator closes, the rail line is lost, the school, the grocery store, the gas station are closed one by one. And so too will any church that once thrived and grew. Its passing is mourned by those few that remain, but we should rejoice that there once was a strong & living Christian presence and that all those who passed through its doors have gone out into the world with thq love of Christ in their heart. The measurement of success has shifted from attendance and finances to the impact,-the ministries that we provide to the local community and to the world around us. As with most relationships, there will be an ebb and flow, endings and beginnings. We cannot remain static in an ever­changing world. We must embrace new ways of being meaningful to the world around us. We must be a reforming and renewing church. The church has been relevant for 2,000 years, and it will be relevant long after we have completed our mission in this world. Pictured at right is Jack Gregoire with his prize and, below, Wyatt Thompson, tries his skill at the chicken curl with mom Karlee. December 14 was the warmest family Christmas ever. The event, held at the curling rink and Lions Park, has been running 14 years. We were able to have fireworks this year and they were out­standing. Many thanks to Tom Grant for setting them off. Pictures with Santa Kids get to visit the jolly old man himself, have the pictures printed immediately, then decorate pic­ture frames (at right). Adults tried their skills slid­ing a turkey through the "uprights". About twelve people achieved that so a playdown was held. Turkey winner was Chad Monner and runner ups Doug Head­rick and Mike Hingley won the chickens. Many thanks to the sponsors and volun­teers that make this event possible.
