Em se plantando, tudo dá: agricultura e diversidade produtiva (região das Missões, Rio Grande do Sul, 1828-1860)

This article discusses the agricultural activities and productive diversity developed in a region supplying the internal market of southern Brazil in the imperial period. The research focus is on the village of São Borja, located in the region of the Missions in the Western border of the province of Rio Grande de São Pedro. The analysis of coeval reports shows the main agricultural products grown in the region investigated. The serial examination of post mortem inventories shows that agriculture was disseminated among the production units regardless of their economic scale. The data investigated reveal that, in most cases, the agricultural establishments diversified their production, combining activities of cattle-raising and agriculture, thus seeking connections to several commercial circuits.Keywords: southern Brazil, nineteenth century, serial history.O presente artigo trata sobre as atividades agrícolas e a diversidade produtiva desenvolvidas numa região de abastecimento do mercado interno do sul do Brasil Imperial. O foco da pesquisa recai sobre a Vila de São Borja, localizada na região das Missões na fronteira oeste da província do Rio Grande de São Pedro. A análise de relatos coevos indica quais eram os principais gêneros agrícolas cultivados na região investigada. Por sua vez, o exame serial de inventários post mortem mostra que a agricultura esteve disseminada pelas unidades de produção independentemente de sua envergadura econômica. Além disso, os dados averiguados revelam que, em sua maioria, os estabelecimentos produtivos diversificavam sua produção, aliando atividades pastoris com a lavoura de alimentos, buscando, assim, vincular-se a mais de um circuito comercial.Palavras-chave: Brasil meridional, século XIX, história serial
