This paper intends to analyze the slave transactions registered in the Livro de Sisas dos Escravos da Vila do Rio Grande, between 1812 and 1822. We investigated the demographic profile of the negotiated slaves, and also analyzed the characteristics of the transactions registered in the book. Most of the negotiated slaves were already settled in the capitania. Africans and men were predominant among them. It was mostly a small trade with a maximum of two slaves’ transactions. The slaves were negotiated directly between the owners without the interference of middlemen.
