A redução dos Zamuco no contexto colonial do século XVIII

This article examines the causes that led to the Christianization of the Zamuco in the beginning of the 18th century and to the demise of this Jesuit reduction (created in the Boreal Chaco) at the end of 1745. The reduction, which was based on the mutual interests of Jesuits and aboriginals, was not only a colonization project that aimed at shortening the distance between the cities of Santa Cruz of la Sierra and Asunción. It also tried to create means to economically and to contain the advance of the “Bandeirantes” from São Paulo. The events that resulted from changes in this project and the attempt to insert of the Zamuco in the way of life of the colonial society ended up undermining the success of the Jesuits’ enterprise in the region. Key words: Jesuit reductions, Bolivia, Zamuco.O artigo examina as causas que levaram à cristianização dos Zamuco, no início do século XVIII, e ao posterior abandono da redução jesuítica criada entre eles (no Chaco Boreal), no final do ano de 1745. Alicerçada nos interesses mútuos de jesuítas e indígenas, além de ser um projeto de colonização que visava encurtar distâncias entre as cidades de Santa Cruz de la Sierra e Assunção, buscou criar meios de explorar economicamente a região, por um lado, e conter o avanço dos bandeirantes paulistas, por outro. Os acontecimentos desencadeados a partir de alterações nesse projeto e a tentativa de inserção dos Zamuco no modo de vida da sociedade colonial acabaram comprometendo o sucesso do empreendimento jesuítico na região.
