The routine castration of calves and pigs is in most cases carried out by the stock owners themselves, many of whom have attained a high degree of skill and perform the operation in a humane and hygienic manner. On many farms, however, the work is done crudely, and the purpose of this article is to give a brief outline of the operations so that they may be carried out expeditiously with the minimum of risk to the animals.
