Buku ini semula adalah disertasi Doktor di university of Melbourne, Australia, dan diterbitkan oleh E.J. Brill dalam seri Studies in Islamic Law and Society. Buku ini terdiri atas delapan bab, diluar bab Pendahuluan dan Kesimpulan. Pengarang buku ini menyatakan bahwa pembicaraan mengenai riba selama ini terlalu menekankan pada aspek hukumnya dan kurang menekankan aspek moralnya. Karena itu studi ini hendak mengisi kekosongan itu, dan melihat bagaimana hal itu diterapkan dalam sistim perbankan Islam dalam praktek.
