This contribution aims at exploring most recent societal changes in European educational contexts as well as the shift occurring in foreign language teaching approaches. The notions of intercultural communication, linguistic landscapes, the language of schooling, with a particular focus on ‘mediation’ are discussed and presented as possible means to sustain learners’ cognitive, linguistic and cultural development in multilingual classrooms
