Background:Violence towards those working in the mental health field is a known problem, consisting of physical assaults, verbal assaults, and threats of harm regularly. Healthcare workers in mental health facilities are at an increased risk of violence at the hands of the patients for whom they care. Ridenour et al. (2015) found that 20% were physically assaulted, 43% were threatened with harm, and over 50% were verbally assaulted at least once during a single workweek. Lack of adequate training in de-escalation of agitated patients is one factor that has been identified as contributing to employee and patient injury.
