Background: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is primarily responsible for urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and some sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. PFD affects one third of women in the United States, and pregnancy/childbirth are major risk factors in its development. Pelvic floor muscle training is considered safe, effective, and low-cost for preventing and treating PFD. However, the majority of antenatal providers do not provide PFD education in pregnancy, leading to low patient knowledge and lack of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
