Estimación de la carga de combustible presente en el sector El Hacha del Parque Nacional Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The Guanacaste Conservation Area (GCA) in Costa Rica, has a sector called El Hacha, where certain spots are vulnerable to forest fires, mainly due to anthropogenic causes. These sites present a savannah ecosystem, where two work areas were selected for the purpose of this research: one affected and the other unaffected by fire. The predominant tree vegetation in these areas is the nance (Byrsonima crassifolia) with a total of 22 individuals and raspaguacal (Curatella americana) with 131 individuals, while the rest corresponds to herbaceous graminoids (HG). The HG reach a degree of coverage of 95, 4 % in the unburned site, while in the burned site, bare soil predominates by 79,0 %. Regarding physicochemical properties, it is observed that the highest calorific value is possessed by raspaguacal with 17, 2 ± 0, 6 KJ g-1, followed by nance and HG. In contrast, the HG have the greatest capacity to lose moisture. They spread the flames at a lower speed, both horizontally and vertically, but for a longer period and with a low level of opacity, compared to the tree components. The estimated fuel load of both sites corresponds to  9149 MJ m-2 in the unaffected site and 1650 MJ m-2 in the site affected by the fire, being HG the greatest fire contribution factor in the El Hacha sector.El Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) en Costa Rica, posee un sector llamado El Hacha, el cual presenta sitios vulnerables a incendios forestales, principalmente por causas antropogénicas. Los sitios presentan un ecosistema de sabana, donde se seleccionaron dos áreas de trabajo, una con afectación y otra sin afectación por incendio. La vegetación arbórea predominante en las áreas son el nance (Byrsonima crassifolia) con un total de 22 individuos y el raspaguacal (Curatella americana) con 131 individuos, mientras que el resto corresponde a herbáceas graminoides (HG). Las HG llegan a alcanzar un grado de cobertura de 95,4 % en el sitio sin quemar, mientras que en el sitio quemado predomina el suelo desnudo en 79,0 %. En cuanto a las propiedades fisicoquímicas, se obtiene que el poder calorífico mayor lo posee el raspaguacal con 17,2 ± 0,6 KJ g-1, seguido por el nance y las HG. En contraposición, las HG tienen la mayor capacidad de perder humedad, pero propagan las llamas a menor velocidad, tanto a nivel horizontal como vertical, pero por más tiempo y con un nivel más bajo de opacidad que los componentes arbóreos. La carga de combustible estimada de ambos sitios se estima en 9149 MJ m-2 en el sitio sin afectación y 1650 MJ m-2 para el sitio afectado por el incendio, siendo las HG el factor de mayor aporte en el sector El Hacha
