Despite the existence of an effective vaccine and of treatments that suppress viral replication, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection remains one of the most frequent chronic diseases. 39% of HBV-related deaths are associated with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common primary liver cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. HBV is indeed the main risk factor of HCC development in patients who generally already have a liver cirrhosis induced by the infection. However, the fact that some HBV-related HCC occur without chronic inflammation underlines the direct oncogenic properties of this DNA virus, which can promote hepatocyte cell transformation through integration into the human genome.
