The style of sailors: Cook’s journals and logbooks

International audienceThe journals have a public success, thanks to the full and abbreviated editions, but with ambivalent interest. On the one hand, they have the advantage of first-hand testimony: they therefore seek indications concerning the countries visited, personal reflections in which one pursues a political, anthropological and revealing vision of one's time. But in fact, what interests the reader in this case is the substance of the travel relationship, not the logbook. On the contrary, the newspaper is characterized by what annoys the majority of readers (and which publishers like to avoid or shorten): the regularity of weather notations, positions, manoeuvres, in short everything that makes the life of the ship at sea. This is the essence of the professional obligation, which had to be submitted to the Admiralty in order to give an account and strategic indications, initially kept secret: in this account, the "average", non-marine reader is not the reader instituted by the text. These technical business ratings are not actually intended for him. But today, they can be read again by comparing their transformation in relation to the use of the general public, or by studying them as such. In addition to their contribution to the history of science, they give a more pragmatic vision of expeditions, anchoring them in the life on board. We also understand what use has been made of it by other sailors (such as Merchant for example), and how much this use differs from that of salons.Les journaux de bord connaissent un succès public, grâce aux éditions complètes et abrégées, mais un intérêt ambivalent. D’un côté, ils présentent l’avantage du témoignage de première main : on y cherche donc les indications concernant les pays visités, les réflexions personnelles dans lesquelles on traque une vision politique, anthropologique, révélatrice de son époque. Mais en fait, ce qui intéresse le lecteur dans ce cas, c’est le fond de la relation de voyage, pas du journal de bord. Au contraire, le journal se caractérise par ce qui procure de l’ennui à la majorité des lecteurs (et que les éditeurs aiment à éluder ou abréger) : la régularité des notations météorologiques, les positions, les manœuvres, bref tout ce qui fait la vie du navire en mer. C’est le fond de l’obligation de métier, ce qui devait être déposé à l’Amirauté pour rendre des comptes et donner des indications stratégiques, d’abord tenues secrètes : à ce compte, le lecteur « moyen », non marin, n’est pas le lecteur institué par le texte. Ces notations de métier, techniques, ne lui sont en fait pas destinées. Mais aujourd’hui, on peut les relire en comparant leur transformation en relation à l’usage du grand public, ou en les étudiant comme telles. Outre leur apport à l’histoire des sciences, elles donnent une vision plus pragmatique des expéditions, les ancrent dans la vie du bord.
