The presence of double structures and mirror-scenes in Euripides’ Helen has generally been viewed by scholars as a way of translating into tragic form the theme of doubleness, which the history of Helen’s eidôlon places at the very core of this tragedy. Without denying the interest of such an approach, we propose to analyze these double structures as parts of an opposition between tragic and comic dramaturgy, which could explain the irregularities of the whole dramatic construction. We thereby suggest that the structural disorder of the first part evokes, with its series of double scenes, the dramatic structure of Ancient comedy, as opposed to the regular tragic pattern – alternation of choral songs and episodes –, which is only employed in...
