The Hierarchy of Human Needs of Riggan Thomson in Birdman Film

The aim of this research is to find the way Riggan Thomson fulfills his hierarchy of needs using hierarchy of human needs theory by Abraham Harold Maslow. Moreover, the researcher identifies the self-actualization?s characteristics of Riggan Thomson during fulfilling his hierarchy of human needs. The researcher uses qualitative analysis technique in analyzing Riggan Thomson in Birdman film by close reading the theory and watching the film, then identifying the hierarchy of human needs of Riggan. The result of the study shows that Riggan Thomson could fulfill his hierarchy of human needs, namely physiological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Moreover, Riggan has six self-actualization?s characteristics: clear perception of reality, focus on problems outside themselves, spontaneity, simplicity and naturalness, sense of detachment and the need for privacy, creativeness and originality, and resistance to enculturation
