Background: Certain metabolites of progesterone such as 3alpha,5alpha-tetrahydroprogesterone (3alpha,5alpha-THP; allopregnanolone) and 3alpha,5beta-THP (pregnanolone) are potent, positive allosteric modulators of gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors.
