The purpose of this work was to search for correlations between the rate of ethylene production during ripening of apple fruits and the molecular structure of the genes involved in its synthesis. To this end, the ethylene production of apple fruit, characterised by slow (‘Fuji’) or fast (‘Golden Delicious’) ripening, was estimated by gas chromotography. The cDNA sequences of the ACC synthase and ACC oxidase genes specific for ethylene production in fruits were retrieved from the EMBL data library and used to design specific DNA primers to be used for their PCR synthesis.
