L’applicazione di analisi quantitative a contesti stratigrafici critici

Ancient Fratte lies on a low hill on the northern outskirts of the city of Salerno. The site, connected with the Etruscan expansion in the south of Campania during the sixth century BC and occupied from the second half of the fourth to the midthird century BC by Samnitic groups, is identified by some scholars with Marcina on the ground of literary sources, particularly Strabo. The knowledge now available on Fratte comes out from data gained since the end of the 19th century till today. Since 1995 the Laboratory of Archaeology “M. Napoli” - University of Salerno leads a research program pointed to standardize traditional data and the ones from the last archaeological excavations. This program provides some geo-statistical analysis aimed at understanding the real stratigraphy upset by the last century excavations. Just for example, we will present a preliminary analytical work on a subtle stratigraphic sample concerning a building of about 900 square metres on the northern side of the ancient settlement. The context, though rich of data, can just give an idea of the real ancient occupation.The bed condition of the archaeological stratigraphy advaises a quantitative approach, although the numerical analysis cannot explain unequal items. So itʼs very important for us the depositional dynamic to understand the reasons upseting the archaeological strata. We are going to suggest as a subject for discussion an archaeology able to put together modern approaches and different data increased time by time.
