Persistent β1-adrenergic stimulation is thought to induce cardiac hypertrophy, alteration in calcium regulation and Cx43 over-expression. Adenosine is a negative feedback inhibitor of adrenergic stimulation in the heart, protecting it from toxic effects of overstimulation.
