The generation of reactive oxygen metabolites is an important cytotoxic mechanism associated with the phagocytosis. In this study we investigated, by luminol-augmented chemiluminescence (CL), the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the haemocytes of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis after the phagocytosis of different concentratrions of zymosan and bacteria (Escherichia coli and Vibrio alginolyticus). In order to test the specificity of the reaction, superoxide dismutase (SOD) was added to the zymosan stimulated haemocytes.The results indicate that the zymosan and bacteria phagocytosis stimulates the production of ROS; furthermore the ROS are easily quantified by luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence.The in vitro stimulation ...
