Houses in the household II: From Gortyn to Athens and back

Houses and Households in the context of the economy and society of classical Athens. In this paper, I will compare the data gathered and analyzed on houses and households from the epigraphic sources at Gortyn with the Athenian evidence.1 Sources that describe architectural features of residential buildings, however, will not be considered here;2 rather, my focus will be on the legal and socioeconomic contexts in which houses were in some way involved in order to illustrate how the concept of “house” functioned as an important marker of family identity and the changing social dynamics of household and community
