Isoprostanes, neuroprostanes, isofurans, and neurofurans have all become attractive biomarkers of oxidative damage and lipid peroxidation in brain tissue. Asphyxia and subsequent reoxygenation cause a burst of oxygen free radicals. Isoprostanes and isofurans are generated by free radical attacks of esterified arachidonic acid.
