Several composite hydrogels of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) with sodium montmorillonite (NaMM) have been synthesized using a fixed polymer/NaMM ratio (4:1 wt./wt.), but various monomer concentrations, in order to obtain hydrogels with different degrees of swelling, and thus different clay contents in the swollen state. For comparison, unfilled pNIPAAm gels have been also prepared at the same concentrations. The equilibrium swelling behaviour of the gels has been studied both in the swollen and in the shrunk state.
