Energy and waste management and water supply are possible means of increasing the quality of life in development countries. One of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG, defined by the UN in September 2000) is to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation (under MDG 7 Ensure environmental sustainability).
