The present study is an overview shedding light on the field of audiovisual translation from and into Arabic, specifically subtitling and dubbing. It considers the most significant theories formulated by Arab and non-Arab scholars in the recent period and puts them in connection all together in one single preparatory paper discussing the translation process, its techniques and strategies employed. It also analyzes the subtitler’s role, the audience, and censorship, this last being a mandatory topic in the debate of audiovisual studies applied to the Arabic language because of its cultural implications
