The intestinal microbiota plays an important role in digestive health but also has an impact on hormonal functioning, immunity and metabolism. Dams present numerous anatomic and physiologic modifications along gestation and lactation and this study demonstrates intestinal microbiota’s modifications along those periods. A decrease in alpha-diversity and an increase in bêta-diversity were observed during the studies period. Some bacterial species, benefic for the newborn, such as Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. are significantly less abundanded at parturition time corroborating with the hypothesis of an entero-mammary bacterial translocation.
