Le Reomaus de Pierre Rouvier (1637). Sources et mise en forme de l’histoire de l’abbaye Saint-Jean de Réôme (Moutiers-Saint-Jean)

International audienceThe work that Jesuit priest Pierre Rouvier dedicated to the Benedictine Abbey of Réôme (Moutiers-Saint-Jean) in 1637 (Reomaus, seu Historia monasterii S. Joannis Reomaensis) is an example how a modern scholar set up a register of medieval writings. It especially shows how he proceeded to collecting, sorting, editing, interpreting and ranking texts by loosening them from their material supports, thus obliterating the conditions for a comprehensive understanding of medieval written artifacts. This article first reconstructs the context in which the Reomaus was produced, by taking into account the manuscripts and printed works of Pierre Rouvier, a scholar, panegyrist and a historian of monasticism. It also examines Rouvier’s relations with the dedicatee of the book, Cardinal François de La Rochefoucauld, who became abbot of Réôme in 1631 and introduced the Maurist reform in the monastery. The article then moves on to analyze the Reomaus’s twofold structure and how Rouvier dealt with medieval sources, especially manuscript 1 of the Bibliothèque Municipale of Semur-en-Auxois.L’œuvre que le père jésuite Pierre Rouvier consacre à l’abbaye bénédictine de Réôme (Moutiers-Saint-Jean) en 1637 (Reomaus, seu Historia monasterii S. Joannis Reomaensis), est un exemple de la mise en registre des écrits médiévaux par un érudit moderne dont le travail de rassemblement, de tri, d’édition, d’interprétation et de classement dégage les textes de leur supports en effaçant ainsi les ressorts d’une compréhension globale des productions médiévales. L’article reconstitue d’abord le contexte général d’élaboration du Reomaus, par rapport aux ouvrages manuscrits et imprimés de Pierre Rouvier, exégète, panégyriste et historien du monachisme, et ses relations avec le dédicataire du livre, le cardinal François de La Rochefoucauld, abbé commendataire de Réôme en 1631, où il introduit alors la réforme mauriste. Ensuite sont analysés la structure bipartite du Reomaus ainsi que les procédés adoptés par Rouvier par rapport aux sources médiévales utilisées, en particulier vis-à-vis du manuscrit 1 de la Bibliothèque municipale de Semur-en-Auxois
