Ciel des hommes: Gender Perspective on Early Aviation in France and Germany (1903-1939)

International audienceThis article analyses the aeronautics of the early 20th century from a gender studies perspective. It takes as its starting point the establishment of the first representations of the aviator, which were already mainly masculine. It then analyses the impact of the militarisation of the aviator during the Great War and the transfer of these representations to civil aviation in the 1920s. It finally examines in greater dept the evolution of women’s place in the increasingly masculine aeronautical world during the inter-war period. It shows how aviation was developed and reinforced as a gendered space. It reveals how the aviator has increasingly become an artefact of hegemonic masculinity in Germany and France, despite the attempts of some women to navigate this male-dominated space in a fundamentally unequal gender relationship.Cet article propose d’analyser l’aéronautique du premier XXe siècle au prisme des études de genre (gender studies). Il prend comme point de départ la mise en place des premières représentations de l’aviateur, déjà majoritairement masculines. Il analyse ensuite la militarisation de l’aviateur pendant la Grande Guerre et le transfert de ces représentations à l’aviation civile dans les années 1920. Il examine enfin plus en détail l’évolution de la place des femmes dans ce monde aéronautique de plus en plus masculin durant l’entre-deux-guerres. Il montre comment l’aviation s’est développée et renforcée en tant qu’espace genré. Il révèle comment l’aviateur est devenu de façon croissante un artefact de la masculinité hégémonique en Allemagne et en France, malgré les tentatives de certaines femmes de naviguer dans cet espace dominé par les hommes dans un rapport de genre fondamentalement inégal
