The portrait of Eros in Egypt from the Ptolemaic era to late antiquity (323 BC – the 7th century AD) : iconography and acculturations

L’étude des images d’éros découvertes en Égypte, datées de la période ptolémaïque à l’antiquité tardive, s’inscrit dans la problématique générale des interactions entre les mondes grec et égyptien et de leur cohabitation par le biais des images divines et, partant, de l’expression des cultes et des croyances. Mettant en jeu la pertinence (ou non) de la recherche identitaire des consommateurs de ces images d’éros, notre enquête concerne plus largement l’apport de l’iconographie à la connaissance des sociétés de méditerranée orientale à partir de l’époque hellénistique. Les représentations d’éros qui composent le corpus de recherche, provenant parfois de contextes archéologiques assurés et recensées dans différents musées ou publications françaises ou étrangères, comprennent des supports variés, du monument aux objets du quotidien, tels que des peintures murales d’époque ptolémaïque, la statuaire de marbre datée de la période romaine ou des tissus de l’antiquité tardive. L’objectif de mes recherches est d’établir une typologie des images d’éros afin de comprendre l’adaptation et l’évolution d’un ou de modèles grecs en Égypte et de rechercher les prototypes du monde grec, afin de mieux de mieux comprendre les liens culturels et iconographiques existant entre l’Égypte et la Grèce. En parallèle, l’étude des sources textuelles me permettra d’approfondir la définition de la figure d’éros, de saisir son rôle mythologique et de comprendre le contexte d’utilisation de ses représentations en territoire égyptien.The study of the representations of Eros discovered in Egypt, that date back to the period of time starting with the early Ptolemaic era and ending during late antiquity, has been a part of the general issue dealing with the interactions between Greek and Egyptian people, and with the way they used to coexist through illustrations of god-like figures. Starting with the features of their worship and beliefs, setting in motion the relevancy – or the irrelevancy – pushing people to search for those illustrations of Eros, our investigation will more specifically tackle the enrichment that iconography brought to the knowledge of Middle East societies as from the Hellenistic era. The visual representations of Eros that belong to this corpus – that may have been identified in genuine archeological discoveries and then listed in several museums or publications, french or not – include a variety of materials: from monuments to daily objects such as murals painted during Ptolemaic times, or the marble statuary dating back to the Roman era or even late antiquity fabric. The purpose of my research is to establish a classification of the representations of Eros in order to understand how the Greek model – or models – was adapted and how it evolved in Egypt and to search for the prototypes, initially part of the Greek sphere, to better identify the cultural and iconographic bonds that both Egypt and Grece used to share. Along with this aim, studying the textual sources will enable me to go deeper into defining the figure of Eros, to shed light on his role in mythology and eventually to clarify the motives that explain why Egyptians used representations of the god within their own territory
