Search for novel (quantum) states of matter is one of the prime goals of contemporary physics. Spin nematic phase, where spins form a state with vanishing dipolar moment while a more complex operator remains with non zero expectation value, was predicted in one dimensional (1D) spin systems with ferromagnetic (FM) interaction between first and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction between second neighbours in the region near saturation field.
