KIBS\u2019 knowledge management strategy between local and global: the case of Veneto regional innovation system

Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) - services that provide knowledge-intensive inputs to other firms - are prominent features of the knowledge-based economy. The KIBS sector - including R&D services, professional services like legal, accountancy, management, engineering and technical and design and marketing services, among others \u2013 is one of the faster growing sectors in the European economy. KIBS have been found to be key factors for local growth, by developing and exchanging knowledge with local actors and supporting manufacturing and (other) service firms\u2019 development, especially in terms of innovation activities. Despite large literature on KIBS emphasize the relevance of spatial proximity with customers, many KIBS develop relationships on a domestic or international scale. The paper aims at investigating the relevance of KIBS in regional innovation systems, by exploring the role of local actors (customers, suppliers, other firms) within the value chains and the relationship between KIBS\u2019 location (urban areas) and knowledge management strategies. The empirical analysis is based on a survey that we conducted in 2009 at KIBS located in the Veneto region, one of the most innovative regions in Italy. The total number of interviewed KIBS was 505 out of 2,984, selected randomly from the universe of 7,049 KIBS located in the region registered within the system of Italian Chambers of Commerce or belonging to accountancy profession. We considered as KIBS firms specialized in the IT and related services, in professional service and in design and communication (NACE Codes: 72, 74.1, 74.13, 74.2, 74.4)
