The overall purpose of my paper is to investigate Elsa Morante’s transtextuality in Arturo’s Island in order to show her modular imaginary at work. First, I propose a new chronology for the novel on the basis of a document acquired in 2016 by the Bibilioteca Nazionale Centrale of Rome which is dated October 5, 1949 and contains the story of a World War II hero returning to his native island. Then, I examine what may be defined as the prehistory of the novel as a matter of expressions, objects, characters migrating for Morante’s early works to Arturo’s Island
