BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is widespread in patients with schizophrenia receiving long-term antipsychotic therapy. Dopamine D2 receptors play an important role in mediating both the therapeutic actions of antipsychotics and their side effects. The present study examined the association of two polymorphisms of the DRD2 gene with metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia.METHODS: We examined 517 patients from several regions of Siberia (Russia) with a clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia.
