The publication deals with the literary reception of the World's Columbian Exposition which took place in Chicago in 1893. Although this particular world's fair has moved a number of authors to produce novels and short stories, the narrative literature resulting from this process has never been systematically analyzed. After providing a sketch of the history of Chicago as well as of the plans and events which preceded the fair's opening, the dissertation concentrates on four novels which have been chosen as examples of one genre respectively: Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's story Two Little Pilgrims' Progress, Clara Louise Burnham's romance Sweet Clover, William Dean Howells' Utopian novel Letters of an Altrurian Traveler as well as Em...
