The Literary Reception of the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition, 1893

The publication deals with the literary reception of the World's Columbian Exposition which took place in Chicago in 1893. Although this particular world's fair has moved a number of authors to produce novels and short stories, the narrative literature resulting from this process has never been systematically analyzed. After providing a sketch of the history of Chicago as well as of the plans and events which preceded the fair's opening, the dissertation concentrates on four novels which have been chosen as examples of one genre respectively: Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's story Two Little Pilgrims' Progress, Clara Louise Burnham's romance Sweet Clover, William Dean Howells' Utopian novel Letters of an Altrurian Traveler as well as Emma Murdoch Van Deventer's detective story Against Odds. It is examined how, in each of the novels, the United States as the event's host nation are represented and if the fair is considered a triumph for the country. This leads to the question if and how the texts have helped to construct a new (self) image of the United States as a nation.Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der literarischen Rezeption der World's Columbian Exposition, die 1893 in Chicago stattfand. Obwohl diese Weltausstellung zahlreiche Autoren zu Romanen und Kurzgeschichten inspiriert hat, ist die daraus hervorgegangene erzählende Literatur nie systematisch untersucht worden. Nach einem historischen Abriss der Stadt Chicago und der Planung und Organisation der World's Columbian Exposition konzentriert sich die Arbeit auf vier exemplarisch ausgewählte Romane: Frances Hodgson Burnetts Kindergeschichte Two Little Pilgrims' Progress, Clara Louise Burnhams Romanze Sweet Clover, William Dean Howells' utopischen Briefroman Letters of an Altrurian Traveler sowie Emma Murdoch Van Deventers Kriminalroman Against Odds. Es wird untersucht, wie in jedem einzelnen der Romane die Vereinigten Staaten als Gastgebernation der Weltausstellung repräsentiert werden, beziehungsweise ob die Ausstellung in den Texten als ein Triumph für die Vereinigten Staaten bewertet wird. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage, ob und inwieweit die Texte geholfen haben, ein neues (Selbst-)Bild der Vereinigten Staaten als Nation zu konstruieren
