Prognosis of fatigue characteristics of asphalt by uniaxial swelling tensile tests

Der Ermüdungswiderstand beeinflusst die Dauerhaftigkeit einer Asphaltbefestigung maßgebend. Der einaxiale Zug-Schwellversuch simuliert die kombinierte Beanspruchung aus kryogener Spannung infolge thermisch behinderten Schrumpfes sowie aus Biegebeanspruchung infolge Verkehrs. Diese schwellende Zugspannung bewirkt neben der Vergrößerung der viskoelastischen Dehnung auch progressiv zunehmende viskoplastische Verformung. In der Literatur wird dazu angemahnt, dass der herkömmlich zur Auswertung herangezogene Ermüdungseffekt, die Verringerung des Elastizitätsmoduls, durch den Aufbau großer Dehnungen verfälscht wird. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass die im einaxialen Zug-Schwellversuch gemessene viskoplastische Dehnung ebenso aus der Materialermüdung resultiert wie das herkömmliche Auswertungskriterium Steifigkeits-Abnahme. Unter Anwendung des Burgers-Modells kann der Verlauf der viskoplastischen Dehnung berechnet werden, indem die ermüdungsbedingte Materialschädigung, abgeleitet aus dem Verlauf der viskoelastischen Dehnung, berücksichtigt wird. Aus Zug-Schwellversuchen unter Variation der Temperatur, der Belastungsfrequenz und der Beanspruchung werden Ermüdungsfunktionen abgeleitet, mit denen die Ermüdungsresistenz prognostiziert werden kann. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Schädigung infolge Ermüdung unabhängig von der zwischen 3 Hz und 10 Hz variierten Prüffrequenz ist, wenn ihr Verlauf über die Zeit dargestellt wird. So weisen neben den Ermüdungsfunktionen sowohl die bei gleicher Temperatur und Beanspruchung gemessene viskoplastische Dehnung als auch die Steifigkeit von der Frequenz im untersuchten Bereich unabhängige Verläufe auf. Durch die Einführung der Belastungsfrequenz in die Ermüdungsfunktionen kann der für die Dimensionierung notwendige Prüfaufwand mit einer nur geringen Einbuße an Präzision erheblich reduziert werden.The resistance against fatigue controls the service life of asphalt pavements. Besides the traffic-induced bending stress, so-called cryogenic tensile stress occurs at low and decreasing temperatures due to prohibited thermal shrinkage. The combination of both is simulated in laboratory by the uniaxial swelling tensile test. In this test, the asphalt specimen is subjected to a sinusoidal load, which is superposed by a constant tension stress. The asphalt’s reaction on this permanent tension stress is the development of visco-plastic strain which eclipses the visco-elastic strain signal. The values of the visco-elastic strain signal are less then a tenth of the accumulating visco-plastic strain. In the international literature it is stated, that the fatigue effects can be hidden behind the substantial irreversible deformation. In this thesis it is shown that the courses of both strain signals can be interpreted as reaction to the same deterioration of the specimen by growth of fatigue cracks by using rheological model calculation. Thus the swelling tensile test is capable for the evaluation of the fatigue characteristics of asphalt material in laboratory. For the use in design and prognosis tools, fatigue functions are elaborated from the results of uniaxial swelling tests with variation of temperature, frequency and stress level. Besides the crack initiation and propagation, the course of stiffness can be used for the characterisation of the fatigue resistance. Further the results gained at varied frequencies (3, 5 and 10Hz) showed, that the testing time controls the fatigue deterioration primarily. If the testing time is used as basis of evaluation, the numbers of endured load cycles as well as the courses of stiffness reduction and visco-plastic strain are indifferent of the frequency. By integrating the frequency inside the equation of the fatigue-function, the test effort can be reduced considerably
