Dendritische Zellen (DCs) sind die wichtigsten Antigenpräsentierenden Zellen (APC) des Immunsystems. Sie sind spezialisiert auf die Antigenaufnahme, -prozessierung und –präsentation sowie die effiziente Stimulation von T-Zellen. Sie nehmen eine Schlüsselfunktion in der Initialisierung einer Immunantwort gegen Pathogene wie z.B. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, dem Erreger der Tuberkulose (TB), ein. Der einzige angewandte TB-Impfstoff, M. bovis BCG schützt nur unzureichend vor adulter Lungen-TB.
