BDNF is known to promote neuronal survival, differentiation and activity-dependent plasticity. While the role of BDNF in regulating the architecture of peripheral neurons during postnatal development is well documented, the cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating BDNF function in the CNS remained so far mostly unclear. Interestingly, I could show that BDNF exerts a cell type-specific effect in regulating neuronal dendritic architecture. Indeed, while inhibitory neurons depend on BDNF for their dendritic development, the dendritic architecture of excitatory neurons is not affected by BDNF depletion.
