Staphylococcus aureus gehört zu den bedeutendsten menschlichen Krankheitserregern und kann eine Vielzahl von Infektionen verursachen. Diese können von lokalen Infektionen der Haut und Weichteilgewebe bis zu lebensbedrohlichen systemischen Infektionen reichen. Haut- und Weichteilinfektionen werden vorwiegend durch zwei klinische Bilder mit unterschiedlicher Pathogenese vertreten. Dabei kann zum einen in oberflächliche Infektionen, die ausschließlich die oberen Schichten der Haut innerhalb der Epidermis betreffen und zum anderen in tiefgehende Infektionen unterschieden werden.
